High Resolution Position Readout
using Linear Encoders and Rotary Encoders
Mounting an encoder directly
to the slider gives a direct reading of slider movement eliminating
lead screw and backlash errors.
For high resolution (>0.001")
position readout, we can mount ACU-RITE ENC glass scale encoders
to most linear UniSlide or BiSlide Assemblies. Details.
Typically, encoders are mounted
to regular Screw Drive type UniSlide stages. Call us for a
quote.
However, to save repositioning time,
they can also be used with Rapid Advance UniSlides as shown
on this
page.
- If this is overkill, see Measured
Travel for other ways to measure
travel.
- If your goal is to send positron data to a computer, it is sometimes
less expensive to use a step motor system without
encoders. Call us.

Linear encoders - Magnetic
Velmex can mount Elgo Electric
EMIX 23 Magnetic incremental linear encoders on outside edge
of BiSlide or UniSlide stages.
Alternatively, linear
encoder output can also be transmitted to a PC directly using
a PCI card like this one. It can read up to 4 encoders. We
do not sell this.
*For longer travel, BiSlide Assemblies are
more cost effective. Spec

Example 1- Single
axis A60 UniSlide with ACU-RITE encoder and QC10V Digital Readout.
This system can have a travel of up to 60" long. The readout
has a RS232C serial output.
Rotary
Encoders
Encoders have quadrature
output using 5 V logic and are stocked in the following resolutions:
100, 200, 250, 400, and 500 counts per revolution (CPR). See
Encoder
selection to view resolution with
encoder.
When combined with a DRO
readout, the encoder counts are converted to inches for the
English thread or centimeters for the metric thread lead screws.
